Post Tribune featured a story about Tranquil in September 2003:

HIGHLAND — After seven years in the salon and spa business, Joyce Drasich-Celis has finally found a place to call home.

As the owner of Tranquil Nail Salon & Spa in Highland, she has developed a combination of services that relax and purify the body and uplift the mind.

Drasich-Celis, who is originally from Portage, is a licensed esthetician and nail technician who studied at Don Roberts School of Hair Design and the International Dermal Institute in Chicago. After working in several spas in Chicago, she decided it was time to return to Northwest Indiana, but was unable to find a place that fit her needs. On March 12 this year, Tranquil opened for business in Boulevard Plaza on Indianapolis Boulevard.

“I couldn’t find the quality I wanted as far as skin care and nails were concerned,” Drasich-Celis said. “I went from place to place and decided it’s time — let’s open.”

Drasich-Celis and her six employees offer facials, waxing, massage therapy, nail services, ear candling and yoga. Most services include aromatherapy in order to provide a relaxing experience. The salon also incorporates hot basalt rock massage into many of its services.
Through this ancient technique, heated rocks are used to rejuvenate muscles.

“This is an aromatherapy-based salon, so anytime you receive a manicure or anything of that sort, you actually get to pick your own oil, so that you have a fragrance that you can enjoy,” Drasich-Celis said. “We also do a lot of hot rock. I’ve noticed around here, there aren’t a lot of people who do hot rock pedicures, manicures or massages, so that’s really incorporated.”

According to Drasich-Celis, the salon’s services emphasize wellness and purification through products such as Dermalogica and Jane Iredale Mineral Cosmetics as well as services like ear candling that focus on removing toxins from the body. She believes that concentration as well as her experience as an esthetician sets her salon apart from others in the area.

“For ear candling, we use a funnel of muslin that is wrapped in beeswax and light the end of it,” Drasich Celis said. “It pulls toxins and helps with headaches, earaches, sinus problems. We also do an aromatherapy massage afterwards.”

Drasich-Celis is also especially proud of pedicures her salon offers.

“I think that the pedicures are phenomenal — the girls do a great job,” Drasich-Celis said.

“They really try to emphasize massage in the pedicures. We also have whirlpool tubs for you to soak your feet in — versus someone just pulling a bucket up to you and saying 'put your feet in this.’ ”

Drasich-Celis chose the 2,000-square-foot facility because of the building was not situated right on the busy road.

“We had been looking everywhere. We wanted something set off from the road a little bit so that the rooms would be soundproof. We wanted it to be very quiet, so that when someone’s getting a massage, they don’t hear the trucks going by — they don’t hear anything.”

The salon’s yoga classes take advantage of the quiet atmosphere. Due to limited space, the classes can only be held when the salon is closed for other services. Instructor Joanna Sypat emphasizes both relaxation and fitness in her weekly classes and private group sessions. Drasich-Cellis hopes to eventually operate a full-time yoga studio.

“We’re hoping to expand in about two years,” Drasich-Celis said. “Our dream is to have a Victorian-style home with a yoga studio, so that way we don’t have to clear everything out of the room and close down to hold classes.”

This salon tester found herself pleasantly stuck for over an hour in a leather chair that had different massage and vibrating speeds. As she soaked her feet in a warm, aromatherapy bath she found the atmosphere - a large open room with plenty of light and windows - very calming. "There were tons of water sounds!" our guinea piglet reports, from several fountains throughout the salon. The music was light, caregiver Djuana gave a memorable pumice scrub, and the entire staff was "wonderful." The owner personally greeted our tester, a new customer, during her treatment. Though she has had other pedicures, she felt this was a truly extraordinary value.

Cost: $38, plus $15 tip

Other services available include: custom facial, body massage, manicure, yoga, hot rock massage, enzymatic mud packs, hydroactive mineral salt scrub, electrical modalities, gels and acrylics

Comments: "It was the staff! Everyone was so welcoming and charming. I was given a tour of the whole facility and they made me feel like a QUEEN! I can't wait to get back. Also, the owner is a licensed esthetician, so in describing her facial services and the manageable prices she maintains, I'm excited about getting back to have a facial."
